Holy Family Church, Brahmavara
The Holy Family Church, Brahmavar, holds a cherished place in the ecclesiastical history of the Udupi region, rooted in the broader context of the Catholic Church in South Kanara (now part of the Diocese of Udupi). Situated along National Highway 66 in Brahmavar—a town of ancient cultural significance, known historically as "Lord Brahma's Vara" or Ajapura, and nestled between the serene Sita and Suvarna rivers—this parish emerged amid the jurisdictional transitions and pastoral challenges of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Historical Background :
Jurisdictional Changes in South Kanara: In 1839, Pope Gregory XVI issued the Bull Multa Praeclare, transferring the spiritual jurisdiction over Kanara from the Padroado Archdiocese of Goa to the Propaganda Fide Vicariate Apostolic of Verapoly. This shift created divisions among the faithful. At Milagres Church, Kallianpur, the majority of parishioners preferred continued allegiance to the Padroado of Goa due to longstanding ties with Goan clergy. A smaller group aligned with the Verapoly jurisdiction and established the nearby Rosary Church.
The situation evolved with Pope Leo XIII's Apostolic Constitution Humanae Salutis Auctor in 1886, which established the Hierarchy of India and, following the Concordat of 1886 between the Holy See and Portugal, ended the dual jurisdiction (Padroado and Propaganda) in South Kanara. An 1887 decree from the Delegate Apostolic in Bangalore, promulgated by the Vicar Apostolic (later Bishop) of Mangalore, confirmed the transition.
These changes led to confusion, withdrawals of clergy, and appeals to the Holy See. Many faithful, attached sentimentally to the Padroado tradition, sought to remain under it. Over time, through patient pastoral efforts, a reconciliation occurred, drawing many back to full communion with the local ordinary.
Origins of the Holy Family Church, Brahmavar :
The seeds of the Holy Family Church were sown during this period of reconciliation. Diocesan clergy serving Milagres-Kallianpur labored diligently to reunite separated brethren in Brahmavar and surrounding areas. Among them was Fr. Julian D’Souza, whose tireless efforts fostered unity. He erected a chapel dedicated to the Holy Family in Brahmavar, initially served as a mission from Milagres-Kallianpur and later used as a presbytery.
The chapel was solemnly inaugurated on April 12, 1931. Fr. Sebastian (Sabas) Fernandes of Giri was appointed in charge of the mission on May 13, 1933, and became the first parish priest in 1934. Through his zealous ministry, Fr. Sabas brought hundreds back into the fold, strengthening Catholic faith in the region.
Arrival of Religious Sisters and Early Growth :
To deepen catechesis and faith formation, Fr. Sabas invited the Sisters of Charity of Saints Bartolomea Capitanio and Vincenza Gerosa. Mother Tartia and two companions arrived in November 1938, establishing a convent that would serve the parish for decades.
Subsequent diocesan parish priests included :
- Fr. Apoline Mathias (1938–1940)
- Fr. Alphonsus Marie Ligoury Sequeira (1940–1949), who initiated construction of a larger church building on August 11, 1946 (though he was later transferred due to injury and tragically drowned in the Suvarna River while serving in Udupi).
- Fr. Edwin A. Castelino (1949–1956) completed the construction; the church was blessed on December 8, 1954 .
In 1956, Bishop Basil Peres invited the Capuchin Friars (OFM Cap.) to assume pastoral care. The parish was formally entrusted to the Capuchins on April 15, 1956, after 22 years of diocesan administration. Fr. Alfred Roche became the first Capuchin parish priest. He completed interior works, including the main altar (consecrated by Bishop Raymond D’Mello on April 11, 1961), electrified the church, procured a bell from Italy with the Sisters' assistance, and fostered spiritual, educational, and social growth.

- The Sisters of Charity established Nirmala Higher Primary School (later expanded to High School and Pre-University College).
- Sub-stations included Pethri (later a separate parish under Fr. Apolinaris, known as "Pethri Padre") and Neelavar (with a chapel built in 1967 on land donated by Basil D’Souza).
- A small presbytery (dedicated to the Holy Trinity, blessed in 1966) was constructed.
- Financial stability was enhanced through a commercial complex along the highway.
